Sustainable Farming Quiz | Agriculture MCQ Practice for IBPS AFO 2026

1

According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), what is a key focus area for climate-smart agriculture research in India?

Ignoring indigenous knowledge in agricultural practices

Enhancing the resilience of Indian agriculture to climate variability

Promoting monoculture cropping systems

Discouraging the use of climate-resilient crop varieties

Developing high-yielding, input-intensive varieties regardless of climate resilience

Solution & Explanation ICAR's key focus is enhancing the resilience of Indian agriculture to climate variability by developing climate-resilient crop varieties, promoting water-efficient irrigation techniques, and implementing soil conservation practices. This is aligned with national goals for food security under changing climatic conditions.

What is the role of agroforestry in climate-smart agriculture?

Decreasing water infiltration and increasing runoff

Reducing biodiversity and wildlife habitat

Sequestering carbon, improving soil health, and providing diversified income

Increasing soil erosion and land degradation

Promoting monoculture cropping systems

Solution & Explanation Agroforestry systems sequester carbon in both trees and soil, improve soil health through nutrient cycling and organic matter addition, and provide diversified income sources through timber, fruits, and other products. This contributes to climate change mitigation and adaptation while enhancing livelihood security.

3

What is the primary role of biochar in climate-smart agricultural practices?

Enhancing soil carbon sequestration and fertility

Increasing susceptibility to plant diseases

Promoting rapid nitrogen volatilization

Decreasing soil pH

Inhibiting beneficial microbial activity

Solution & Explanation Biochar, produced through pyrolysis of biomass, enhances soil carbon sequestration by providing a stable carbon form. It also improves soil fertility by increasing water retention, nutrient availability, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), supporting plant growth.

4

What is the main benefit of using crop diversification in climate-smart agriculture?

Increased vulnerability to pests and diseases

Enhanced ecosystem services and reduced risk of crop failure

Lower overall farm productivity

Decreased soil fertility and nutrient cycling

Reduced resilience to climate shocks

Solution & Explanation Crop diversification enhances ecosystem services by promoting biodiversity, improving soil health, and disrupting pest and disease cycles. It also reduces the risk of crop failure by providing multiple income streams and buffering against climate shocks like droughts or floods.

5

Which of the following is the most effective strategy for managing soil salinity in irrigated agricultural lands under climate change scenarios?

Ignoring soil salinity issues and continuing conventional practices

Applying excessive amounts of nitrogen fertilizer

Planting salt-sensitive crop varieties

Using poor-quality irrigation water with high salt content

Implementing efficient irrigation techniques and drainage systems

Solution & Explanation Efficient irrigation techniques, such as drip irrigation, and proper drainage systems help to leach salts from the root zone and prevent their accumulation in the topsoil. This is crucial for maintaining soil productivity under climate change scenarios, where increased evaporation rates can exacerbate salinity problems.
