IBPS AFO 2026 Complete Strategy

IBPS AFO 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

The IBPS Agriculture Field Officer (AFO) 2026 exam is one of the most competitive opportunities in banking for agriculture graduates. Before building a strategy, you need to understand exactly what you are preparing for.

Key Dates (IBPS Calendar 2026–27): Notification expected June 2026  |  Prelims: 29 August 2026  |  Mains: 1 November 2026

The most important takeaway: Prelims does not count in your final merit. It is purely a qualifying gate. Your rank is decided entirely by Mains score and Interview performance.

Phase 1 — Prelims Strategy (Qualifying Gate)

The goal in Prelims is simple: clear sectional and overall cut-offs without wasting precious study time. Do not over-invest here.

Prelims Priority Topics

SubjectHigh Priority Topics
ReasoningPuzzle & Seating Arrangement (15–20 Qs), Syllogism, Inequality, Blood Relations
Quantitative AptitudeData Interpretation (15 Qs), Arithmetic, Number Series, Quadratic Equations
EnglishReading Comprehension (20 Qs), Cloze Test, Error Detection
AgriPrep Tip: Spend 30–35% of your total study time on Prelims. The remaining 65–70% must go to Agriculture (Mains). Most AFO aspirants make the mistake of over-preparing Prelims and entering Mains under-prepared.

Phase 2 — Mains Strategy (This Decides Your Rank)

The Mains exam has 60 questions on Professional Knowledge (Agriculture) in 45 minutes. Every mark here directly impacts your final merit. The Mains carries 80% weightage in the final selection formula.

Agronomy — Highest Weightage Subject

Agronomy alone accounts for 20–25% of the Mains paper. Cover these chapters without fail:

  • Tillage and cropping systems (Kharif, Rabi, Zaid crops)
  • Irrigation methods — drip, sprinkler, furrow; water use efficiency
  • Weed management — classification, control methods, herbicides
  • Organic farming — vermicompost, green manure, biofertilizers
  • Crop production technology — sowing methods, seed rate, spacing
  • Nutrient management — NPK, micronutrients, fertilizer application

Soil Science — Second Most Important

  • Soil classification — USDA, FAO, Indian classification
  • Soil fertility and productivity; macro and micronutrients
  • Soil pH — acidic, alkaline, saline, sodic soils and reclamation
  • Soil erosion types and conservation measures
  • Organic matter and soil microorganisms

Agriculture Finance & Banking — Easy Marks

This section overlaps with the Interview and is scoring if prepared well:

  • Kisan Credit Card (KCC) — eligibility, credit limit, interest subvention
  • Priority Sector Lending (PSL) — targets, sub-targets for agriculture
  • NABARD, RRBs, SLBC — structure and functions
  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) — coverage, premium rates
  • PM-KISAN, PM-KSY, Soil Health Card Scheme
  • Warehouse receipts, crop loans, NPA norms for agriculture

Phase 3 — Interview Strategy

The Interview carries 20% of the final merit. The panel typically tests three areas:

AreaCommon Questions
Personal / HRTell us about yourself. Why banking after agriculture? Strengths and weaknesses.
Technical AgricultureSoil types of your home state. Current MSP rates of major crops. Rabi vs Kharif crops.
Banking AwarenessWhat is KCC? Functions of NABARD. What is Priority Sector Lending? Define NPA.
SituationalHow will you recover a loan from a distressed farmer? How will you convince a farmer to use a new crop variety?
AgriPrep Tip: Prepare a 2-minute self-introduction that connects your agriculture background to banking and rural development. Know 5–6 government schemes with exact launch year, budget allocation, and eligibility criteria. Panels in 2025 heavily tested PMFBY, PM-KISAN, and KCC.

Final Merit Formula

Understanding how your rank is calculated helps you prioritize correctly:

ComponentRaw MarksWeightageContribution to Merit
Mains (Agriculture)6080%(Your Mains Score ÷ 60) × 80
Interview10020%(Your Interview Score ÷ 100) × 20
Final Merit Score—100%Maximum 100

A candidate scoring 48/60 in Mains and 70/100 in Interview gets: (48/60 × 80) + (70/100 × 20) = 64 + 14 = 78 out of 100. Every single mark in Mains is worth more than a perfect Prelims score.

Qualifying Marks to Keep in Mind

  • General Category: Minimum 40% in Mains to qualify
  • SC / ST / OBC / PwBD: Minimum 35% in Mains to qualify
  • In case of a tie in final merit, the older candidate ranks higher
  • Participating banks (2025–26 cycle): Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Over-preparing Prelims: Prelims is qualifying only. Two months of Prelims-heavy prep is two months lost from Agriculture.
  2. Ignoring Agriculture Finance: Banking schemes like KCC, PSL, PMFBY appear every year and are straightforward marks.
  3. Skipping current affairs: Government agri schemes launched in 2025–26 (PM-KUSUM, Natural Farming Mission, Agri Stack) are regularly tested.
  4. Not attempting mocks: The Mains is 60 questions in 45 minutes — 45 seconds per question. Speed is non-negotiable.
  5. Weak Interview prep: 20% weightage means a strong interview can move you up significantly in the merit list.
